The AFRHiCARE team met in Nairobi from 7–13 January, bringing together partners and stakeholders from Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, and the UK.
The week focused on shared learning and collaboration, with post-doctoral researchers and PhD students reviewing survey findings, sharing analysis progress, and strengthening cross-country links. Discussions fed directly into ongoing work to improve the quality and responsiveness of first-referral hospitals in Kenya.
The meeting closed with strategic planning sessions to set priorities and next steps for the next phase of the programme.
Kenya Ethics Protocol Approval: Exploring the Future of Hospitals offering 'first referral' services in Africa:
The Kenya ethics protocol “Exploring the Future of Hospitals offering ‘first referral’ services in Africa: Research on Service Delivery, Workforce Dynamics and Technology Integration in Kenya linked to a multi-country collaboration including South Africa and Uganda” was approved by the Kenya Medical Research Institute Scientific and Ethics Review Unit (KEMRI SERU) on 12th May 2025. The next step is to obtain for a research license from the National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) https://oris.nacosti.go.ke as well as local facility clearance.
